Originally from the Northern Rhone valley, of which it is the native grape, is thought to have been introduced in France by the Probo Emperor, originally from Smirnium in Croatia. Used exclusively for wine making, it is in strong expansion in the regions with a warm climate, due to its intense aroma that makes it ideal for cutting with grapes with a neutral taste.
