ORIGIN
The use of rootstocks dates back to the late 19th century, when phylloxera - an insect originating from North America that attacks the roots of Vitis vinifera - caused the devastation of numerous vineyards.
The need to identify a solution to the phylloxera problem led to the search for plant species resistant or tolerant to the parasite in its area of origin, the American continent.
After numerous grafting trials, during which plants showing graft incompatibility or poor rooting capacity were discarded, three main grapevine species suitable for grafting with Vitis vinifera were identified: Vitis riparia, Vitis berlandieri and Vitis rupestris.
ROOTSTOCK SELECTION
Today, the role of the rootstock and its careful and informed selection, based on the analysis of varietal characteristics and the pedoclimatic environment, represent a fundamental step in vineyard design and in achieving a proper vegetative - productive balance.
The choice must therefore be based on the evaluation of the following characteristics:
Graft compatibility Induced vigour
Resistance to active limestone and waterlogging Nutrient uptake efficiency
Drought resistance Sensitivity to soil fatigue
ROOTSTOCK TYPES
Each year, our company produces various variety/rootstock combinations with the aim of providing every winegrower with the product best suited to their specific business needs.
All plantations intended for rootstock production have been established exclusively using base - category clonal selection material, supplied by leading Italian and international viticulture institutes.
These institutes, together with the Plant Health Services of ERSA of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, carry out thorough annual inspections to verify compliance with current phytosanitary and agronomic regulations. This ensures the supply of healthy material of certified and verifiable origin.
Currently, based on their distinctive characteristics, TRUANT Società Semplice Agricola offers the following rootstocks:
