Originally from Spain, more precisely in the Rioja area, the grape variety takes its name from its tendency to maturation early. It is cultivated successfully in Spain; in Italy it is present in the regions of Trentino Alto Adige and Sicily. Used exclusively for wine making, as a blend with other red grape varieties.
