ORIGIN

 

Originally from Tuscany or in any case from the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines, the grape variety has found wide diffusion throughout Central Italy distinguishing itself in different biotypes. More recent is its cultivation in the South and the Islands. Used exclusively for wine making, it is one of the most important classic Chianti grape varieties with varying percentages from area to area reaching even 95%, suitable for ageing.

LEAF

Medium, pentagonal, pentalobate, wide U-shaped peziolar sinus, closed upper lateral sinuses, narrow V-shaped lateral sinuses. Irregular teeth.

CLUSTER

Medium, pyramidal, winged, compact.

GRAPE

Medium, oval, very pruinose skin, purple black colour.

COMMENT ON THE CLONE

Italian clone vigorous, high and constant production. Good fertility. Suitable for hilly, clayey and calcareous soils with abundant skeleton. Recommended training systems: spurred cordon with short prunings. Biotype of Tuscan origin, with early sprouting and late flowering, sensitive to oidium, resistant to drought and wind but can be damaged by spring frosts.
