Originally from the Eastern Mediterranean basin, the grape variety has found the preferential area of cultivation in the Piedmont hills and in the Oltrepò Pavese. Nowadays, it has a vast geographical distribution, covering almost the whole peninsula. It is also widespread in Eastern Europe under the name Tamjanika in Serbia, Temjenika in Macedonia and Tamaioasa in Romania. Used exclusively for wine making, it produces sweet and intensely aromatic wines, often bubbly or sparkling.
