Originally from the Monferrato area, the grape variety is widely diffused in Piedmont and Lombardy. Nowadays it is cultivated in various regions of Italy, including the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines, Campania and, even if limited, everywhere in the South. Used exclusively for wine making, both for aging and for the production of young wines from which derives a very valuable product, rich in colour and structure.
